Definite articles (THE)
and indefinite articles (A/AN).
Example : THE boy had AN animal.
Most sentences contain at least one noun.
Example : The FARMER said his name was Tom.
Proper nouns always start with a capital letter.
Example : I’ve never been to EGYPT.
Example : Cameron BUILDS a house.
Adjectives can also be used to describe the qualities of someone or something.
Example : I like OLD houses.
Example : Which of THEM do you prefer?
Prepositions are usually to do with time, position or movement.
Example : We walked TO the shop.
Some common ones include and, or, but, because, for, if, and when.
You can remember them using the word FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
Adverbs are usually formed by adding -ly to the end of an adjective.
Example: Ali walked QUICKLY.
Look at the title of the activity.
There are nine parts of speech listed below the title each with a different colour.
As you hover over each heading, a message box will appear telling what each of the part of speech is with an example.
In each of the sentences each word is set within an invisible frame, the background colour of which can be changed to any of the colours above.
As you look at each sentence can you identify any common nouns, Proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs?
If you can click on a word ONCE to change the colour to RED [an article].
Click on a word TWICE to change the colour to ORANGE [a common noun].
Click on a word THREE TIMES to change the colour to FUCHSIA [a Proper Noun] and so through the colours and parts of speech.
Don't worry if you make a mistake just keep clicking on the word until the colour turns back to WHITE.
If there any you are unsure about leave them WHITE.
